Honestly I didn't know what to call this thread. Oh well, anyone hailing from the land down under? To get us started- what is your favorite native species in Australia?
I'm going to have a heck of a time deciding... I really like all the avian, reptilian and aquatic life here. Eughh. Like there's the black shouldered kite, wedgies, black swans, blue eyes, leglesslong dogs lizards, gobies, stubby tail gecks, birdemic corellas- sooo much I can't. Wedged-tailed eagles though. I saw one perched on a dead tree hiking in a park near my home as a kid. It was... a spiritual experience in the middle of urban sprawl, if I could ever describe it. Since then I've only seen two circling the sky two years ago. It's amazing the kind of predatory birds you can see if you look up often enough.
Oh- OH. Storytime! Once I was in this little park in the middle of my neighbourhood. There were tons of birds in the area. Ibis poking around, corellas, galas and rainbow lorikeets being silly as they do. There were some birds nesting in some gum tree thickets that people have planted behind their backyard fences. I was just admiring the view of all these birbs when suddenly from one of the trees, a bird made a very clear, rapidly repeating call. All of the corellas and galas suddenly flew away in a panic to the park on the otherside of the road. After several minutes passed a peregrine falcon flew by, rather low in the sky. Normally I only see them as silhouettes, so it was really cool to see one fly so close over me. Their possible hunt was completely foiled by the alarm call of the bird. So it turns out that peregrine falcons will go for corellas, and the corellas learnt to recognize the alarm calls of other bird species.
Idk, I just thought it was cool.
