Lord William Squigglebottom the first. [also known as bocchan] He's the first ever snake I've gotten and he is filled with an unbridled tiny rage that cannot be contained. I hope he calms down over time though as I'd like it if my only snake was one I could hold. xD Although mom is on the fence about wanting me to get rid of him sadly, with a small consideration for letting me swap for another, HARMLESS species after finding out he was rear fanged venomous[Though I tried to express to her that it's not that dangerous].. Luckily she seems to be settling down a bit but I can't be sure if she'd bring it up again once the reptile show comes around next month. She wouldn't hurt him or anything though, she'd just nag me to get rid of him until I did which I really don't want to.Anyways, might anyone have some tips for a first time owner about how to befriend an angry noodle?

i used to have a tiny angry noodle myself. i had a friend with lots of experiences with hognoses help me out. they are notorious bluffers... 90% of "taming" my hoggie was just...not being afraid of him anymore, i never had a snake that bluffed so much before so i was very nervous around him like, every time he would flatten his head and strike at me i would jerk away and leave him alone but i realized he was all bark and no bite, even when he struck at my hand he always did it with a closed mouth plus i realized no matter how much he bluffed in the tank as soon as i took him out he was a sweet little puppy dog

Hognoses are sosososososo cute! I think the rear-fanged venom would freak me out. I'm not familiar with it's effects or anything, either. But the snoots and grumpy little faces ARE sweet lol

Cass it has been likened to a bee sting; there's usually some swelling and redness but not very serious although some people do have mild to extreme allergic reactions ranging in symptoms like tons of swelling, bruising, and pus

seth Ah! Thank you. I had a feeling it wasn't too big of a problem. Is it more of an on-impact pain? or does it get greater over a span of time? These guys act so tough with such little bites to boot. haha

Thankfully i've never been bitten before. but most people i see experiencing the bites, they have for the most part said that it doesn't hurt that bad after the initial bite although fun fact, they don't actually have venom glands but a modified saliva gland that makes their saliva venomous, like a komodo dragon. the fangs just create the open wound that the saliva comes into contact with. (^ at least i'm pretty sure about that, i have heard some people say that it is debatable)

With rear-fanged, they really have to chew on you to get venom in you, so you'd have time to get them off before that happens. Also, he's so cute ;-; I love hognose. I also have an angry boy, but he's a ball python. Very defensive, been tagged by him a couple of times. But with enough handling I'm confident he'll grow out of it. Also my baby carpet python Anastasia, but that's kind of a given.

What a cute little angry snoot! I'm sure with time, they will tame down and be fine. And there's very little chance of you actually getting envenomed by your little baby. They're mostly bluffers. I have two baby corn snakes that bluff at me all the time, I just giggle at them honestly. You just need to give them some time to realize you aren't a threat to them and they should be fine. Just work with them!

Ah! I also didn't know they had to do more of a chewing thing. It's pretty cool that everything is saliva based, if you are correct! What little cheeky boogers, they are. I do think they are so cute....I've only ever been bitten by a Ball Python.

Hogs are the best! Tbh a lot of hog bites either come from hatchlings (which are more "Is this food???"), not washing your hands after handling fish/foods, or hand feeding your animals; which is just asking for trouble. A lot of times the first bite doesn't cause a reaction, but the more you are bitten and actually envenomed the more of a reaction you're likely to get. Some people end up have severe reactions, others none at all, it's very dependent on the individual. I've been told that the swelling is the only thing that causes any real discomfort, but in the 3 years I've had hogs I have not been bitten.
